Memorize the alphabet. Find whatever alphabet song they teach schoolchildren, and sing that to yourself in the shower. Know what sounds it has that others don’t, which sounds are absent in your native language, which sounds are difficult for non-native speakers to master. Find out if there have been historical shifts in pronunciation that you need to be aware of if using older target-language materials such as tv or textbooks.</li> <li>As far as finding text-based materials in your target language, Google is your most helpful resource. Look up strong, highly-rated university or graduate programs of your target language and then hop over to their university bookstore website to see what textbooks and materials <em>they</em>use to teach their students the language.</li> <li>Non-classroom resources have always been extremely helpful to me. Music, movies, television, poetry, news websites, and children’s books have been immensely helpful with pronunciation, accent reduction, vocabulary growth and solidification. Music is especially helpful because it introduces new words that are correctly pronounced and (usually) in natural-sounding, natively-produced sentence structures. Poetry is good for improving spelling and grammar, and it’s easy to digest because it’s shorter than prose. Children’s and baby’s books are my number one recommended resource because, thanks to short, logical sentences and accompanying pictures, they are <em>specifically designed</em> to be intelligible to people who have limited understanding of the target language. Plus, children’s literature uses everyday words that are commonplace in the domestic sphere, which is essential if you want to master the spoken language. </li> <li>Though I know that people who say things like, “I can understand the language, but I can’t speak it,” are scorned for not actually knowing the language, this is actually a completely legitimate problem. Babies (and animals!) can’t speak, but understand simple words, phrases, and commands. Just because they can’t reply doesn’t mean they’re not comprehending. Practice the act of listening. Babies listen for nearly two years before they utter anything more than simple words. Listen and repeat. Don’t be afraid to sound silly. Sometimes I listen to the same line in a song over and over, repeating it out loud, translating it, and then I comprehend. When I hear the same words again, I understand quicker, and quicker. Repetition through <em>use</em> is key. (Rote repetition is good for getting a good grade on tests, but not for learning.)</li> <li>ENJOY YOUR LANGUAGE. Seriously, if you’re not enjoying learning it, abandon it. Finding it difficult is unavoidable. But find joy in it. (Anyone who’s followed my blog during my last years of Hebrew study knows that I complained about Bible translations just about every five minutes.
